Plantation Enterprise in Colonial South Carolina, $18.38 (2011)
By S. Max Edelson.   Plantation Enterprises is an intelligent and thoughtful review of the development and growth of plantations in the Lowcountry during colonial times up until the Revolutionary War.   The book analyses how colonization, slavery and the cultivation of rice started while also providing a narrative of personalities and events.   Rice was not grown extensively on Johns Island.   But the book provides an important understanding of the European establishment in the Lowcountry and the origins of the slavery system as it evolved, both of which are crucial to understanding Johns Island’s place in history.
