Johns Island is a beautiful gem of nature located in the Lowcountry of South Carolina, one of   more than fifty sea islands along the South Carolina and Georgia coast.

The mission of the Johns Island  Conservancy is to preserve and safeguard the natural habitat, wildlife, historical and agriculture resources of Johns Island.   There has been enormous development on Johns Island in recent years and it will continue.    These resources are precisely what makes Johns Island such a desirable place to live.    Though continued development is inevitable, respect for the environment, ecology and history of the Island is only sensible; it will improve the economic value and happiness for current and future residents as well as our many visitors.

Conservation and development are often considered to be in opposition to one another. The Johns Island Conservancy believes that this does not have to be the case. These objectives can and must be reconciled to the mutual advantage of all interested parties while maintaining respect for the island’s ecosystem. This objective can be achieved through information, education, knowledge and understanding.

  • Johns Island is a beautiful natural gift given to us by mother earth and father time.
  • Development and growth on the sea islands of the Carolina Lowcountry is inevitable.
  • This gift is one of the main drivers of development. This gift must not be lost in the process of development. Nor should any single interest or organization be allowed to co-opt this gift for their exclusive benefit.
  • Development and conservation need not be in opposition. Indeed, they are linked. A symbiosis must be found to ensure the quality of life for all the inhabitants of the Island while allowing reasonable economic returns.
