Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic, $25 (2007)

By Erskine Clarke.  Dwelling Place is a detailed account of life on a Georgia rice plantation from the beginning of the 19th century through the end of the Civil War.   Though technically not the Lowcountry, Liberty (?) Hall in Riceboro GA is just over the state line and it’s owner’s were connected to Charleston for the social and commercial life.   The book integrates the story of the plantation’s owner, a Presbyterian minister, with that of the enslaved workers and their families.
