The Story of Sea Island Cotton, $22.87 (2005)
By Richard Porcher and Sarah Fick. The cotton grown on the sea islands of the Carolina Lowcountry in the 18th century was the finest cotton ever produced. This strain of cotton was perfected here on Johns Island by Kinsey Burden whose plantation, Oakvale, was off River Rd. on Burden Creek. This book tells the story of how that cotton was developed and disappeared with the boll weevil infestation of 1920. The book includes a section about Lowcountry plantation houses though unfortunately almost all of Johns Islands old grand houses have disappeaeed over the years.
Where can I get a copy of this book? I am a direct descendent of Kinsey Burden. I am his great-great granddaughter and would love to learn this history. Thanks.
